Spatial Directions according to the Signs

Hi all,

This is the list given on the Skyscript site, and on other sources as well, for spatial directions according to the signs:
--
Aries: east
Taurus: south-east
Gemini: west-south
Cancer: north
Leo: east-north
Virgo: south-west
Libra: west
Scorpio: north-east
Sagittarius: east-south
Capricorn: south
Aquarius: west-north
Pisces: north-west

I understand the list quite well except for Gem, Sco, Aqua and Pisc.
As Fire relates to east, Air to west, Earth to south and Water to North.
How come, though, that Gemini doesn't relate to west-north? As it's closer to Cancer than it is to Capricorn.
The opposite logic for Aquarius. Should be west-south, doesn't it?
And shouldn't Scorp be north (as it's water) by west (as it's closer to Libra)?
And Pisc should be north-east, it seems.

these are Ptolemy's assignments.
Tetrabiblos Book I

W.Lilly assigns the sign Gemini to the West.
Scorpio the North,
Aquarius the West
and Pisces the North

Of the Triangles.
The third triangle
is the one drawn through Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, composed of three masculine signs,

The sign of Gemini lies toward the summer tropic,

Libra toward the equinox,

and Aquarius toward the winter tropic.


The fourth triangle,
which is the one drawn through Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, was left to the only remaining planet, Mars, which is related to it through his house,

Scorpio; and along with him, on account of the sect and the femininity of the signs, the moon by night and Venus by day are co rulers.

Scorpio lies close to the winter one,

and Pisces to the equinox.




I combine both in horary questions.

@Dima Gur Here is an article by Anthony Louis of 2018 with the same assignments of points of the compass to signs as in you original post, where he attributes that assigment to William Lilly in "Christian Astrology" ("p.204") and he gives his (hypothetical) interpretation of why assigned that way:

The Ancients have delivered many rules, and do say, that to judge in what part of the house
house or ground or ground the thing is in, you must see to the Lord of the hour,

and if he be in the tenth house
or eleventh, you may say the thing is in the South part of the house

and if he be between the fourth house and Ascendant, then North-east:

Thanks for the Anthony Louis article, just what I was looking for.

Admittedly though, his explanation was a bit obtuse. Still the best one I got so far.
(placing the cardinal sign amongst the triplicity on the AC, and deriving the directions of the rest of the triplicity trio this way)
